In Berwang itself, there
are all the usual facilities that may be required during a holiday abroad.
Although a small village, it is more than adequately supplied with gift
shops, local costume and clothes shops, sports shops (for those walking poles
and spare walking socks), and shops where you can buy postcards and camera
films. Exposed films can be
developed in the village and we usually commission a series of group photographs
from Sylvy, Berwang's photographer, which can be purchased before the course
end.
There are two good supermarkets with ample stocks of mineral water, lunch-making ingredients such as bread, cheese, sausage, tomatoes and other fruit, wines and beers, and essentials such as toiletries, sun lotion etc.
Money-changing and withdrawal
facilities are available, there being several options:
the village has a cash machine that takes the usual ATM cards and has
dispensed Euro from 2002. In the same
square as the market venue (pictured), there is also a bank for changing traveller's cheques and other
currencies. An alternative is to
use the facility provided at the beginning of the holiday by the Hotel Singer,
which is the 'home base' of the course - providing much of our accommodation,
usually offers to change currency and traveller's cheques at minimal
commission.
Conveniently, stamps are available from postcard selling shops and the Hotel Singer reception. There is also a post office in the village.
There are two hairdressers in the village, and general medical practitioner and dentist are available should the need arise.
The village church is Roman Catholic and holds weekly services.
For further ideas on local facilities, there is also the tourist office, which has maps and other information, both about Berwang and the surrounding areas – visit their website at www.tiscover.com/Berwang.
