On the Berwang Holiday Music Course, great importance is attached to achieving a balance between music-making and 'holiday'. It is therefore marvellous that Berwang itself offers such a splendid variety of leisure facilities. Berwang is a quiet, mountain village at a height of 1336m; there are many opportunities for walks of varying difficulty, from leisurely strolls in the village (and its surroundings) to steep climbs. For example, near the Hotel Singer is a chairlift that can transport you to the Hochalm, a 1600m peak having a commanding view over Berwang and stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. At the top is the Hochalm restaurant and you may either descend by chairlift or enjoy a walk down through the pine trees, stopping half-way down for a well-earned drink at the Jägerhaus. For other walking ideas, please click on our walks page, or refer to the excursions pages for ideas for holiday activities further afield.
In
Berwang, at the start of the footpath up the Hochalm, there is a wonderful, outdoor
heated swimming pool in a beautiful setting, surrounded by pine trees growing up
the sides of the mountain. In the
same location are hard tennis courts, 15-hole crazy golf, a volleyball net, a giant children's
slide and playground, and plenty of grassy banks on which to sunbathe.
There is also a snack bar selling soft drinks, beers, ice cream and snack
meals.
Nearby, at the Berwangerhof hotel, is an indoor swimming pool that can be used for a small charge. Bicycles can also be hired in the village.
Berwang
also boasts many bars, cafes and
restaurants, which are available for lunches,
tea/coffee breaks from music sessions and evening meals.
The
Café Sprenger is a particular favourite, with its attractive garden
area and its delicious array of mouth-watering Austrian cakes; this is a regular
meeting place in the afternoons, and the singers and string players take coffee
there in session breaks! The
wind section spend their coffee breaks in the friendly Eisstuble with its
lovely garden and 'suntrap' south-facing terrace.
