Members of the Berwang Holiday Music Course may, if they wish, prepare (often during free time) for one or more of the informal concerts to be given during the fortnight. Informal concerts are distinguished from the formal concerts by having an audience drawn only from other course members. They take place after dinner, as part of the evening's entertainment, usually in the annexe of the Hotel Singer, although one may be held in the church. Listener members are, of course, part of the audience at both informal and formal concerts.
The informal concerts at
the Berwang Holiday Music Course are therefore designed to enable members
to perform pieces which they have brought with them or which they have prepared
during the course itself. It is
also easy to find others with whom to perform, such as an accompanist or
duettist, either by word of mouth or by advertising on the BHMC notice
board.
Each informal concert comprises from six to nine items, and lasts for about an hour. The items themselves are varied: a typical programme might include a solo aria or lieder; a piece for wind ensemble; a vocal duet (perhaps light or humorous); a movement from a string quartet; an item for massed choir; one involving members of all three sections, such as part of a cantata; and other solo instrumental items.
There are opportunities for all pianists on the course to take part, whether as soloists or accompanists. There are plenty of opportunities for preparing for these informal concerts, both on free days and during free time on scheduled days. There are various rooms suitable for practice, with piano or keyboard in some, which can be 'booked' a day at a time using the lists on the BHMC notice board.
The relaxed nature of these informal concerts, engendered by the obvious empathy of the audience, enables members of the course who do not normally perform in public to achieve the satisfaction of doing so.
