Local Activities

When no music sessions are scheduled, there is time for the other important component of the Berwang Holiday Music Course: leisure activities and relaxation.  Within a reasonable distance of Berwang and certainly within easy reach for a 'free day' excursion, there are a variety of places of great natural beauty or of cultural interest.  These include:

Places having a music connection, such as Salzburg (Mozart's birthplace), Garmisch-Partenkirken (home to Richard Strauss) and Mittenwald, where string instruments are made:      

•       visits to Salzburg – Mozart's birthplace and the setting for the world-renowned music festival;

•       Garmisch-Partenkirchen – the home of Richard Strauss for most of his life and a pretty, typical Bavarian town.  Garmisch hosts the Richard Strauss Institute (closed Mondays).  Here, in this beautiful setting and surrounded by towering mountains, the grandeur of many of Richard Strauss' larger-scale works is almost tangible; and

•       Mittenwald – an important centre of string instrument manufacture, where they also teach this craft.
